The Portugal winger is believed to have put the property on the market privately rather than through estate agents following his world-record move from United to Real Madrid in Spain for 80m during the summer.
He bought the house for 3.85m in 2006 and wants 4.5m.
But the recession hasn't hit the affluent world of top professional football - with some players bidding over the asking price.
A host of millionaire footballers, most from Manchester City, are said to be interested in the property, which boasts an indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, gym, and cinema room.
Among those who have reportedly expressed interest are City signings Carlos Tevez - bought from arch rivals United - Emmanuel Adebayor, Gareth Barry and Kolo Toure.
Toure is said to be the favourite after tabling a whopping 5.5m bid, way over the asking price.
United's new signing, Antonio Valencia, is also said to be interested.
Whoever buys it will have familiar neighbours.
United defender Rio Ferdinand and former England star David Platt live on the same street.
The new owner will be keen to alter at least one feature - Ronaldo had metal bars fitted in one of the windows spelling out CR7, his number.
One estate agent in Alderley Edge told the M.E.N: "It's not being marketed through an estate agent. It's being done privately, which is often the case with footballers. Ronaldo's agents no doubt represent or know the other players with the means to buy it and they will be touting it around.
"The recession isn't affecting that end of the market. They earn astronomical sums.
