Tommy Hilfigers Stone Hill Estate

House Tour: Tommy Hilfigers Stone Hill Estate

by HOOKEDONHOUSES on MARCH 26, 2008

-

Fashion designer Tommy Hilfigers mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut is now on the market for $27.9 million. I found the MLS listing for it and had to share it with you. Its always fun to look at famous peoples homes to see how they live.

Stone Hill is a 20,000 square foot estate, with 7 bedrooms, 9 baths, 8 fireplaces, and 4 garages, decorated with an artfully eclectic mix of Georgian moldings, vintage marble/stone fireplaces, cashmere/exotic leather wall treatments and heated marble floors.

The property boasts over 4 acres with an infinity pool and tennis court. If the weather isnt accommodating, theres an indoor basketball and squash court, gym, sauna, and spa treatment room. Oh, and dont forget the wine cellar and grotto.

What do you think? Do you like it? Would you buy it if you had a spare $27.9 million lying around?

Jennifer Lopezs 1970s Colonial on Long Island

by HOOKEDONHOUSES on MARCH 24, 2009

Can you imagine this woman (above) living in this house (below)? Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have reportedly purchased the white Colonial next door to their current home on the North Shore of Long Island. They paid $2.05 million for the 5-bedroom, 4 -bath home built in 1972, which sits on 2.24 acres.

Today were going to play our Which 5 Things Would You Change game, but with a twist. Instead of telling me the first 5 things youd change about the house if you bought it, I want to know what 5 things you think Jennifer Lopez would need to feel at home here.

Take a look through these MLS photos and then tell mehow would you J. Lo this up?

Some websites have speculated that the house may be for Jennifers mother Guadalupe, who helps care for twins Max and Emme (via Real LI). Others speculate that its simply a way to guard their privacy, and that the house might be coming down altogether to make room for extra tennis courts or something.

But lets imagine theyre using it. What 5 changes would you make for J. Lo? If you need a reminder of what her decorating style is, check out the post I wrote about the nursery she decorated for her twins Max and Emme last year.

UPDATE: Valerie Kellogg of Newsdays Real LI blog mentioned this post today and quoted some of the comments that you left here. Check it outyours may have been one of them!

Sandra's Luxurious Modern in Brentwood

Sandra's Luxurious Modern in Brentwood
House Tour

sandrachang_2.jpg
Name: Sandra
Location: Brentwood Los Angeles, California
Size: 2,400 square feet
Years lived in: 8 months Own
Months ago I was visiting interior designer Craig Olsen at his showroom on La Brea. In the corner window, he had a gorgeous black and white striped couch on display. He told me how he had custom upholstered it for his client Sandra's new home. After almost a year of residence, Sandra welcomes us to her new Brentwood abode.

Sandra, an agent in the entertainment business, purchased her Brentwood home 8 months ago. To bring out the charm and to design a warm modern look for her interior space she hired Craig Olsen. Craig said his main objective was to work with the colors that Sandra loved, and to bring rich textures to each room. Sandra has created a layered home of sleek modern lines, with deep hues and all the rooms have a palette of their own.
One of the best features of this home is the view and its privacy. Sandra's house is a small oasis in the heart of LA, yet removed from the hub of the city. It's quite relaxing and serene, which is perfect for someone who works all day long in the hustle of Hollywood entertainment.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Proudest DIY: My $5 Liberty of London pillow. I put it on the Eames chair in the living room.

Best Advice: Hire Craig Olsen to help you design your home.
Dream Sources: Liberty of London, Charles Eames, and the Craig Olsen Showroom on La Brea.
Bethanys Additional Questions:
What is the single most significant thing in your home? The portrait of my father in my office.
When you think of designing a home what is the most essential part? Comfort.
How has the lifestyle and culture in Los Angeles affected your personal design aesthetic? I dont think I ever would have purchased this style home if it wasnt for Los Angeles. This house is so LA. I never want to travel I love my home!

Laura's Patchwork Style Apartment

House Tour

Name: Laura
Location: North East Portland, Oregon
Size: 525 square feet
Years lived in: 2 rented
Laura's one bedroom apartment is full of thrifted, flea market and vintage finds. She soaks in lots of natural light with large windows in each room and when she's not grading her students' writing assignments, Laura can be found rearranging all of her beautiful objets d'arte. Her attention to detail and attuned sense of all things fabulous make this apartment just darling.

Laura, a Texas native, came to Portland by way of New York City. She's been in the Northwest for several years now, but has picked up stylish treasures from all over the country. Her apartment has beautiful bones and not a lot has changed structurally since it was built in the 1930s. This lovely place, with its wooden floors, moldings and ornate radiators, sets the perfect stage for all of Laura's collected items. My favorite item is the large, vintage map of Oregon hanging above Laura's bed, which she found in the trash can at the school where she works.

Laura has a great eye for repurposing found/secondhand images and artwork. She framed an old diptich of a farm house which hangs next to a sketch of several bunnies alongside her family photos. Laura tells a story by way of seeking out the special within the mundane. She reminds us that great, frame-worthy artwork doesn't necessarily come from an art gallery or traditional "artist".
Lastly, Laura's original kitchen is very cute. With glass cabinets lining one entire wall, Laura displays her collected curios, china, little bowls and canned goods with style. She's a great cook with a passion for wholesome summer produce, so you never know what might be served on a tiny, pretty plate.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Vintage mixed with a little modern and a lot of found objects.
Inspiration: Undiscovered treasures, objects with history, meaningful design.
Favorite Element: The original features of the apartment the glass-paned kitchen cabinets, the floors, the moldings, the radiators, etc.  I also love the openness of the apartment and the floor plan it really allows for natural air flow and lighting.
Biggest Challenge: The patchwork updating of the apartment lots of things are old and need to be replaced.  The kitchen floor is pretty gross and is long overdue for a change.  The bathroom is 13 shades of white and 12 of them are peeling.  But as a renter, I'm only willing to invest as much as I can take with me.  Much of what I've done is an attempt to complement or, sometimes, to cover up the state of the apartment at this moment.
Proudest DIY: Honestly, the entire ensemble is something I'm proud of.  The apartment evolves with my preferences and style.  I'm really proud of how far we've come together!
Biggest Indulgence: I don't tend to spend a lot on things (and can't really afford to either on my teacher's salary) so the sofa was a big purchase for me.
Best Advice: Obtain what you love.  It's more important to commit to objects that are meaningful and important rather than just stylish.  Choose things you love and they will fit together somehow.  Also, embrace the imperfect.

Robbie Laughlin's Beautiful Runyon Canyon Apartment

Name: Robbie Laughlin
Location: Hollywood near Runyon Canyon Los Angeles, California
Size: 1,000 square feet, 1 Bedroom + 1 Bath
Years lived in: 6 years Rent

Robbie Laughlin, the E! News host, lives in an ideal mid-sized one bedroom home at the foot of Runyon Canyon. His building boasts classic floor plans and gorgeous city views. Tucked minutes away from the hustle of the city in the heart of Hollywood, this apartment's location truly is the best of both worlds.

When Craig Olsen told me about his friend Robbie's home he said, "You will love this apartment, it's gorgeous and classic LA." He was right! The building itself is a lovely complex of units that sit facing south. Robbie's apartment has hardwood flooring with vintage features like crown molding and wainscoting. Craig helped to bring out the traditional elegant style with touches like reupholstered vintage Phyllis Morris chairs and a tufted headboard. I love that Robbie's home carries a richness with such a charming aesthetic, built on a mix of both investment and budget pieces. In my opinion he has created the perfect home that shows one way to do modern luxury right, on a lovely, livable scale.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Eclectic
Inspiration: Beautiful things
Favorite Element: I love the location and the views
Biggest Challenge: I need bigger closets!
What Friends Say: They dont want to leave. Friends from out of town love to stay here.

Best Advice: Surround yourself with things you love.

Bethany's Additional Questions
What is the single most significant thing in your home? The painting in my dining room. My grandmother painted it its of my family's property.
When you think of designing a home what is the most essential part? Beauty and comfort. I think you have to love your environment and feel comfortable in it.
How has the lifestyle and culture in Los Angeles effected your personal design aesthetic? I don't think LA has effected my personal design aesthetic at all. I know what I like and no matter where I live that would always be there. I would make my style work anywhere I lived.

Lisas Lovely Beach House on Sea Island

by HOOKEDONHOUSES on AUGUST 17, 2011
Areader named Lisa wrote me about her beach house renovation on Sea Island in Georgia, saying, I love New England and Virginia architecture. When we spotted this home on the island in 1999, my husband and I were smitten! As an artist and a frustrated architect I always felt the house had so much potential.
When I saw the photos of how it looks since they completed their renovation, I asked if I could share them with you. Im a sucker for a traditional, shingle-style house, and I like that hers looks more like a home than a showplace.
Heres how the exterior looked when they bought it, before it got a facelift:
Their architect was William T. Baker & Associates (I could spend hours looking through his portfolio). He has written a couple of books, and Lisas home will be featured in a new one coming out next year. Cant wait to see it!
Even though its a big house, she says she wanted each room to feel cozy and inviting. That made this two-story great room a bit of a challenge, but all of the woodwork and warm colors keep it from seeming too grand.
She had slipcovers made to update this furniture recently, and heres how it looks with the new fabric:
A lot of the homes on Sea Island were inspired by Addison Mizner, who designed the original hotel on the island The Cloister in 1928, so a shingle style home is not very common down here, Lisa explains.
The original fireplace in the family room was two stories high, A tall, skinny stretch of tabby (a local finish, which is a mix of cement, shells, and sand). They only had the square opening for the fireplaceno mantel or anything, Lisa says. Now its much more traditional and down to earth.
The artwork over the mantel is something that Lisa painted as a gift for her husband Derek when they were dating.
Lisa says that she loves the traditional houses in old movies, and you can see that old-movie influence in rooms like the kitchen.
The kitchen has a Viking stove and an Aga. She says the Aga really is the heart of a home. The Viking is there for her guests who prefer to cook on something more familiar.
The painting over the Viking stove was done by Lisa herself of their marsh view. She says its just propped there so she can remove it when cooking something too messy.
This is the Keeping Room by the kitchen:
Looks like a comfortable, sunny spot to hang out in!
Lisas studio:
I think I could work in a room like this. No problem.
Her sons room:
Her daughters room:
I like to do most of my own decorating but have a decorator (Gerry Burge of Allenbrooke Carpets and Interiors) who has the most fabulous stash of fabrics and a magical way of putting them together, Lisa says. She is wonderful and lets me do my own thingjust gently nudges me if she thinks I am heading in the wrong direction.
I really love her master bedroom. Thats her beautiful Kuvasz pup Marley lying on his bed next to hers.
I can imagine these rooms as the sets for a classic old movie starring someone like Katharine Hepburn or Barbara Stanwyck.
The wallpaper is from Pierre Frey and has timeless look to it.
Lisa says she owes a lot of the credit for how the renovation turned out to her builder Frank Serafini and his talented artist wife Renee who works with him. (Look for Renee in the September issue of Romantic Homes!)
The master bath is just as pretty:
All the bedrooms have balconies with scenic views.
Instead of the beach, the balconies look out over the marsh, which Lisa says is beautiful and constantly changingboth seasonally and throughout the day.
The light can be breathtaking. Since it is a tidal marsh, it can go from all lush green grasses with only a few tidal pools to 85% water in a matter of hours, Lisa says and has the photos to prove it. Heres a sunset viewgorgeous!
Theres a screened porch, too, with a fireplace for cool nights:
And a terrace with a pool for sunny days:
Heres how the back of the house used to look, before the renovation:
And here it is now:
My look is not really in, Lisa says, but I dont really want it to be! I just want our home to have a certain feeling and to be a reflection of our family. I am not trying and have never wanted to try to impress anyone. I just like to create an atmospherea warmth. I want my family and friends to feel that they can plop down anywhere and feel at home.
I love Lisas approach to creating a home. Its always fun to see where my readers live and hear their house stories. Many thanks to her for giving us the tour!
