Brothers & Sisters: Nora Walkers House in Pasadena

by HOOKEDONHOUSES on MARCH 8, 2009
First of all, I have to thank all of you who begged me to do a post about Nora Walkers house in the TV drama Brothers & Sisters. I rented Season One and was immediately captivated by not only Noras home (shown here), but daughter Sarahs, too. The sets are all amazing on this show. I could do an entire weeks worth of posts based on it, but Ill restrain myself.
Brothers & Sisters premiered on ABC in 2006 about the Walkers, a family in California that owns Ojai Foods. Theyve had a lot to deal with since their father (Tom Skerritt) died, as they began to discover all sorts of secrets he had been keeping from them.
(Note: I took most of these photos myself while watching the first season on DVD. Sets may have changed a bit in future seasons.)
Updated to add: For those of you who asked me to add a photo of Rob Lowe, who plays Senator McAllister on the show, here you go, even though it has nothing to do with the sets. I think we can agree that he contributes to the scenery. This is from the second season when he marries Kitty (Calista Flockhart):
The sets are so amazing that its hard to believe these rooms are on a soundstage and not in real homes. You can read an interview with the set designers Denny Dugally and Bryan Venegas here. Bryan says:
When decorating a set, I always keep in mind who the character is and what quirks I need to exploit to sell their personality. With the Walker Kitchen, I wanted to stay true to the architecture and to who Nora (played by Sally Fields) is. The house is a beautiful Spanish home in Pasadena so I wanted to sell the fact that the Walkers were financially well off without making them stuffy or material. I also made sure the house had a sense of history and functionality. Nora is very organized, obsessive, and a mother so I made sure her surroundings told her story.
Heres a photo of the set from the Subzero website:
The show reminds me a little of The Family Stoneits that kind of big, tightly knit family that sticks together despite their differences. And the Stone and Walker families both have sprawling old houses that they gather in. If there are any other houses from TV shows or films that youd like me to feature in weeks to come, let me know!
Here is a video tour of the sets given by cast members that was shot for a segment on The View. Youre able to see much more of the rooms than you can from the show or these photos alone. You can see what Hollys house looks like, and they explain how one set is rearranged to represent different rooms in Kevins apartment:

19 Kids & Counting: The Duggar Family Home in Arkansas

by HOOKEDONHOUSES on AUGUST 16, 2010
Duggar Family in front of Arkansas house
Every Monday I feature the houses from TV shows and movies. Have you seen the reality series 19 Kids & Counting? It follows the Duggar family, which has become famous for havingyou guessed it19 kids (the show was originally called 17 Kids & Counting). Theyve had two more babies since this photo was taken in 2007 and, as Michelle Duggar says in the shows opening, Yes, I delivered them all myself.
The Great Room has 2,000 square feet and features an open family room, kitchen, and dining area:

The Kitchen:

I keep staring at this photo, trying to figure out how that little girl 1) got up there on the counter, and 2) isnt going to fall. Must be a stool down there we cant see?
Duggar Diner
The dining room table seats 20 and has a beverage center handy (my kids would love if we added one of these to our dining room!):

The large laundry room has four washers and four dryers. Nearby is a giant closet where all of the clothes for the family are stored. Pretty smart idea considering the amount of laundry they must do. The kids have to go to the main closet to get their clothes each day.

The family is on the cover of People magazine, in which they say 19 might not be enough, and theyre open to Baby #20:
Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar have always been open about their willingness to have children. But when the devout Baptists and stars of TLCs 19 Kids and Counting faced the catastrophic aftereffects of their 19th childs premature birth, many assumed they might be done.
But now the couple who only recently brought baby Josie home after being hospitalized for six months as she recovered from a perforated bowel and rare digestive problems say they are ready to consider a 20th child.

The overhead view as seen on Bing Maps shows how sprawling their property really is (thanks to Kim for the link!):
Duggar house-birdseye viewI dont watch the show very often, but it fascinates me how organized they are and how they seem to handle so many kids with such calmness and grace. Trust me, if I had 19 children, I would need pharmaceutical assistance in order to smile as much as Michelle does.
You can see the rest of the photos and get more information about the house here: Virtual Fun Zone. (Thanks to Kim for the link!)

Sandra's Luxurious Modern in Brentwood

Sandra's Luxurious Modern in Brentwood
House Tour

sandrachang_2.jpg
Name: Sandra
Location: Brentwood Los Angeles, California
Size: 2,400 square feet
Years lived in: 8 months Own
Months ago I was visiting interior designer Craig Olsen at his showroom on La Brea. In the corner window, he had a gorgeous black and white striped couch on display. He told me how he had custom upholstered it for his client Sandra's new home. After almost a year of residence, Sandra welcomes us to her new Brentwood abode.

Sandra, an agent in the entertainment business, purchased her Brentwood home 8 months ago. To bring out the charm and to design a warm modern look for her interior space she hired Craig Olsen. Craig said his main objective was to work with the colors that Sandra loved, and to bring rich textures to each room. Sandra has created a layered home of sleek modern lines, with deep hues and all the rooms have a palette of their own.
One of the best features of this home is the view and its privacy. Sandra's house is a small oasis in the heart of LA, yet removed from the hub of the city. It's quite relaxing and serene, which is perfect for someone who works all day long in the hustle of Hollywood entertainment.

Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Modern but comfortable with touch of whimsy.
Favorite Element: My bed- the headboard in particular (designed by Craig Olsen). It reminds me of the sunsets from my house.
Biggest Challenge: Configuring the living and dining area where one didnt exist.
Biggest Embarrassment: I dont have a swimming pool yet! ?
Proudest DIY: My $5 Liberty of London pillow. I put it on the Eames chair in the living room.
Biggest Indulgence: The chair and the ottoman in my bedroom from Twentieth.
Best Advice: Hire Craig Olsen to help you design your home.
Dream Sources: Liberty of London, Charles Eames, and the Craig Olsen Showroom on La Brea.
Bethanys Additional Questions:
What is the single most significant thing in your home? The portrait of my father in my office.
When you think of designing a home what is the most essential part? Comfort.
How has the lifestyle and culture in Los Angeles affected your personal design aesthetic? I dont think I ever would have purchased this style home if it wasnt for Los Angeles. This house is so LA. I never want to travel I love my home!
