Shorts

What is this? I asked, holding up a balled up paper towel.
He shrugged. I dont know.
I scowled at the towel, wondering whether I should open it to find out what was hiding inside or to just throw it away. I decided to just throw it away.
I padded into the living room, stopping suddenly as I heard a scratching noise come from the wall behind the desk. I strained Did I actually hear a scratch?
Silence.
S. I. L. E. N. C. E.

Wait, there Yes! A scratch. And now a scuffle!
You goddamn mice!!! GET OUT OF OUR WALLS!!!!
I banged on the wall with my fist and screamed a few more profanities.
Welcome to my life.
Filled with rodents, balled up paper towels, bored cats (yes, bored!), and long hot showers to make the shivering go away.

What I'm digging right now

The Food Network Magazine
. I'm a total magazine junkie and, unfortunately, several of my favorites (Cottage Living, Domino, Blue Print) have recently gone under. Out and about one day a few weeks ago, I picked up the Food Network Magazine based on the pesto pasta picture on the cover, and I'm completely digging it! It's great because the recipes are super easy to make (unlike Martha's), plus they have some great entertaining articles/tips, what's hot in the kitchen for gadgets, kitchen makeovers, and more. I may have found my new favorite...

Vintage summer shot

So, I've been sitting here thinking about how I'm tired of shivering while I sit at the computer, which then prompted me to think of warm weather (seriously, what is better than that first really warm day to kick off spring, with the birds singing and the snow melting and that smell... the smell of earth shaking off the cold). I then went in search of a nice summer picture to post and I found this one. I'm not sure what year this is, but I'm going to guess probably early 90s because my cousin Seth looks like he's about 3 or 4. This is one of many, I'm sure, lobster bakes we had at my grandparent's house in Limington, Maine that year.

From left to right: my cousin Blake, my Mom Pam, my cousin Meredith, Me, and my cousin Seth. I definitely have braces on, and I'm shocked that I'm actually smiling and showing my teeth (I hated smiling and showing my teeth with those damn braces!), so it's got to be at least 1992.

The Grammy Awards

The 51st Grammy Awards were on last night and, well, I have a lot to say.

Hits:

Whitney looks good! Life without Booobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbyyyyyy! is definitely treating her well. Even though she sounded a bit confused a few times. But what was up with her awkwardly pulling her dress back to reveal her full leg / thigh?

Holy Kings of Leon. Very sassy on the red carpet.
Hey Coldplay, this is how a male group dresses for the red carpet.

Carrie Underwood's performance of "Last Name." She rocked it!

Paul McCartney and Dave Grohl performing "I Saw Her Standing There." I love Dave Grohl and he totally kicked some major butt on drums.

Now, I hated what MIA was wearing (um, she's pregnant and her due date was the day of the awards!), but her "Swagga Like Us" performance with Lil Wayne, Jay Z, T.I., and Kanye was pretty good. I just love her cause I love her.

Adele and Jennifer Nettles (from Sugarland) singing Adele's awesomely fantastic song, "Chasing Pavements." I do love both of these women!

Radiohead performing with the USC marching band (um, this should've opened the show!). Very hot!

I don't know who Dweezil Zappa's date is, but she was dressed better than practically every single female attending the show. I love the style of this dress.

Misses:

U2 opening the show. And, with a song / album that isn't even eligible for the awards. Wait, what? One of the actual nominees should've opened. Actually, a lot of the performances seemed a bit odd to me (Um, Jonas Brothers and Stevie Wonder?). See Complete and Utter Tragedies below.

Katy Perry's sloppy performance of "I Kissed a Girl." Yawn. And, what is up with that outfit??
This is... well, it's autrocious. The song's called "I Kissed a Girl" not I kissed a fruit basket. This is another one that I would love see get a new stylist.

Did Solange Knowles think she was going to the 9th grade dance? Um, that's what you're wearing to the Grammy Awards? Did you remember to put your bubblicious in that cool little purse, Solange?

Complete and Utter Tragedies:

Kanye West's hair. He's totally channeling Michael Jackson's
Thriller days with a pinch of Eric La Salle in Coming to America. And I think Estelle is wearing Aretha's hat from her presidential inauguration performance.

What in the world was going on with Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift singing a duet together? Did anyone's ears bleed besides mine? God, it was, as my friend Simon Cowell would say, complete and utter drudgery. That Miley girl just drives me nuts anyway (seriously, those facial expressions when she sings... she might as well be sitting on the toilet trying to poo). If you missed it but still want to hear the horridness, you were warned.

Honestly. Lisa Rinna, please please please stop wearing such revealing clothing. I mean, seriously, we're close to crotch shot here. You're not 22. Or even 32. Next time you go shopping on Rodeo Drive, please spend the extra few bucks and pick up some class.
Please. And maybe find a new hair salon.

Oh, wow. You can't even tell she's pregnant in this thing, which is maybe what MIA was going for. Easy access for the EMTs if she were to go into labor? All I know is if she went into labor in that thing, the baby would probaby come out thinking her/his mother was a peacock.

Salem Chocolate & Wine Festival

Alf, Aaron, Craige, and I enjoyed a bit of Salem's Chocolate & Wine Festival on Saturday, which included 12 different ice sculptures around downtown, some tasty treats at certain restaurants, and even some singing events (which we didn't participate in). Here are a few highlights from the day.

Milk Chocolate Stout at Salem Beer Works... mmmm. Delicious.

Alf enjoying his stout sampler

The dancing polar bear

Yum...

Yes, I posed for this sculpture

Love this shot. The open signs reminds me of some creepy motel in a scary movie

San Diego

I'm back! Coming back to the cold Northeast certainly wasn't very easy, especially after having spent eight perfect days in California. The weather was absolutely incredible! It felt so great getting some sun on my face and just relaxing outside... plus, spending time with my very good friend Tom (and John!) was just what the doctor ordered. San Diego reminds me so much of Portugal! I felt like I was back Praia da Luz! I loved it. We took some great walks, spent time on the beach playing horseshoes, went to a few open houses (Tom is a real estate agent and he took me to one home that was listed at $7 million!!!), had some great food, listened to music, sang to A LOT of music, went to a winery, went to a cocktail party at the W Hotel, spent a few days in Del Mar just being lazy (and watched a really freaky movie called The Strangers - whatever you do, don't watch it alone!!), and then spent two very fun days in LA. I'd like to thank John again for putting up with both Tom and I being incredibly silly, giggly, and a bit out of control.

We took John's convertible to LA and, well, I got a LOT of sun on my face and chest. I had a bright red nose that made Rudolph's look dull. We stayed at a funky newish hotel called The Thompson on Wilshire in Beverly Hills, and what a great roof deck bar / pool area. Very hip and cool and with a great view of the city. Our first day in the land of the beautiful, we went to Malibu. I love Malibu. The drive along the water flanked by the hills that were home to these amazing houses... A lot were celebrity homes, but as you can imagine, they were gated so that intrigued individuals, like Tom and myself, wouldn't be able to stalk, I mean gawk. We ate a late lunch at Paradise Cove and enjoyed a few cocktails under an umbrella, with our toes in the sand. Soon after we had been seated,
Freddy Rodrguez and a friend sat down across from us. I LOVE Freddy, so I was pretty excited. Ever since Six Feet Under, he's been one of my favorites. And recently, he's been on Ugly Betty. Needless to say, I was happy he was my first celebrity sighting.

Our second day in LA we drove around a bit and then ended up on Mulholland Drive. I'm not sure if any of you have seen the movie, but it was crazy cool and because of it, I needed to ride the infamous Mulholland Drive. It reminded me a bit of the Road to Hana in Hawaii, but at least Mulholland Drive was a proper two lane road! The Road to Hana was definitely more scary, since it was really only one lane (for two way traffic!) and the twists and turns were completely nuts. We drove by Jack Nicholson's house, but again, gated and very private, so no peeking. I got car sick (shocking!), so we had to pull over at one point and take a breather. But, the drive was well worth it. And, as we were heading out of Beverly Hills, Pat Sajak went flying by us in his blue convertible Mercedes...
